Darryl Loy
and the
Modern Learning Collaborative

Author Morgan Housel recently asked a few thought provoking questions, one of which was of particular interest.  He asked, “What was true a generation ago that no longer is, and who is clinging to that old truth?”  While difficult to quantify, my experience tells me the most obvious answer is: most of what happens in schools today.  Interestingly, I am apparently not the only educator who feels this way.  Sir Ken Robinson, a world renowned visionary in the field of education, once said of the state of education, “The issue is not to reform education, it’s to transform it.”  Herein lies the purpose of the Modern Learning Collaborative.

My purpose is to move education toward that transformation, driving the ultimate rethink to free students and teachers from the antiquated, ritualistic and centuries-old influences on education and learning.  To replace the ideas that:

…good education involves the imparting of knowledge by an adult standing in front of the class

…it’s the 2nd Tuesday in November and our 6th grade math class should be on chapter 7 of the textbook

…every 13 year old child is the same mentally, emotionally and are equally mature so they should be in the same classroom

… learning occurs best in siloed 50 minute blocks of time

…students learn best when they work quietly and independently at their desk

Those ideas are grounded in a world that no longer exists.  Those ideas demonstrate that schools remain disconnected from reality.  Let’s begin to replace those ideas with the realities that:

…knowledge is no longer synonymous with power, the Internet has seen to that

…essential skills such as Curiosity, Creativity, Communication, Collaboration and Critical Thinking are key to equipping and activating students today for their future

…technology and digital devices like cell phones are not inherently evil and we must teach students how to use them, lest the students be use by them

…learning is lifelong.  Rather than K to 12, it’s K to gray.

… school is to teach kids how to express themselves using the tools that currently shape their world - Dr. Jordan Shapiro

My mission is to partner with school and district leaders to evaluate their programs, courses and classes and look for opportunities to begin the transformational change that is so desperately needed.  Together, let's foster deep connections between curriculum, technology, maker, library media and media arts in ways that create modern, relevant learning environments that allow all students to thrive.

Partner with me and let’s embrace modern learning.
